A therapy tailored to your needs
Most of Sarah's integrative sessions incorporate techniques from multiple modalities as mentioned below such as approaches developed on the founding principles of osteopathy, relaxation massage and energy work many times within the framework of the postural corrective work of NeuroLymphatic Reactive Triads™ Bodywork or the subtle work of CranioSacral Therapy.
NeuroLymphatic Reactive Triads™ Bodywork
Reactive Triads™ Bodywork was originated in 2001 by Ann Watkins. Since then, she has continued to uncover ways to integrate more of the body systems into her work and has developed techniques addressing increasingly more complex issues within the body. Now known as, NeuroLymphatic Reactive Triads™ Bodywork, this modality brings together the muscle system, the lymphatic system, and the joint system helping to reconnect the brain with muscle patterns that are inefficient or nonfunctional across a number of systems. Origally founded on principles taught in NMR/NKT, NLRTB changes the NMR/NKT paradigm from pairs to triads and involves more than just the muscle system (See below for more information on NMR).
NeuroLymphatic Reactive Triads™ Bodywork reprograms the body’s response to shock, improves lymphatic flow, frees up the viscera, decreases swelling, and alleviates muscle pain. NLRTB brings relief to muscle pain, nerve pain, limited range of motion, and inflammation and also initiates long lasting postural correction. It is truly a breakthrough in chronic pain relief, lending itself to aiding folks both preparing for surgery to prepare their bodies to be in the best state to receive needed surgical treatment and heal from it with more ease and comfort. For those rehabilitating from surgery, once scarring has fully healed, NLRTB is an ideal modality to help the body in thes process of returning to a more balanced, healthy state by releasing any holding patterns, rehabilitating scarring and draining excess lymphatic fluid that may be lingering. (For more detailed information and for practitioners interested in learning this work see Ann’s DVD, published in 2006-2007, Reactive Triads™ a breakthrough in chronic pain.)
- NeuroMuscularReprogramming® (NMR)
Muscles need to be able to contract and relax as needed whether they are working isometrically or in complement to one another. Originated by Jocelyn Olivier in the 1970s, NeuroMuscularReprogramming® is a very interactive muscle-balancing technique employing muscle testing and retesting. Through this muscle balancing technique, the muscles learn to appropriately activate and deactivate, thus building support in virtually healthy muscles. The results are that the ability of the muscles to relax is enhanced which lends to increased range of motion, improved posture and decrease in or complete relief of pain and discomfort.
NMR (also known as NKT) often requires multiple sessions in order to set the stage to rebuild a foundation on which to advance postural corrective work. NeuroLymphatic Reactive Triads™ Bodywork was born on a foundation of NMR in a quest for increased ability to address a wider range of more complex dysfunctions than can be addressed with NMR/NKT. Just as NMR, NLRTB is also very interactive incorporating muscle testing and retesting.
- Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (LDT)
Lymphatic Drainage Therapy an osteopathic technique developed by Dr. Bruno Chikly most often employing very light touch. This modality is “used to reduce inflammation in the interstitial tissues”. LDT is frequently integrated into Reactive Triads™ Bodywork--thereby known as NeuroLymphatic Reactive Triads™ Bodywork--in order to speed the process of reducing inflammation with the action of the muscles (See Reactive Triads DVD).
For a more detailed explanation see the description in "Other Osteopathic Modalities Frequently Integrated into Our Sessions" section on this same page below.
- Relaxation and Therapeutic Massage
Relaxation Massage is greatly enhanced by the integration of NeuroLymphatic Reactive Triads™ Body Work as it teaches the muscles how to relax. When relaxation is indicated we will typically use more typically familiar forms of massage. If we find a muscle area that is not responding to such modalities, we will ask you if you mind if we do some testing. If you specifically do not want the testing to be included, we will honor that request, however, muscles typically relax more deeply with muscle balancing where other modalities are less effective.
Note: For all modalities mentioned above, I modified wording for descriptions written by Ann Watkins the originator of NeuroLymphatic Reactive Triads™ Bodywork with her permission. For more detailed explanations please visit the “Therapies” page on Ann’s site.
Osteopathic Modalities Frequently Integrated
The approaches listed below were developed by osteopaths following such osteopathic principles as listening and following the tissues. For this reason, I call them osteopathic modalities.
Our bodies are meant to move and accommodate from the inside out. When tissues get sticky due to many reasons including dehydration, lack of movement, injury, and scarring, they form adhesions and stop sliding over one another the way that they are meant to do. This limits their inherent patterns of movement which can negatively impact their function and cause misalignment and pain in tissues and structures connected by the fascia all over the body.
When employing osteopathic techniques, manual therapy practitioners listen to the structures of the named systems (i.e. viscera/organs, nerves, structures of the central and peripheral nervous systems, etc.) and the tissues that surround and support them. In doing so, we aid those structures to track more properly and freely so that the body can make an appropriate shift and free up the tissues to move as they were meant to do and therefore to function more efficiently with less or no discomfort.
Below is a list of osteopathic modalities in which I am trained and use as indicated to address some dysfunctions, maladies and pain/discomfort caused by these restrictions in the systems specified by the name of the techniques:
- Visceral Manipulation (VM) and Neural Manipulation (NM)
The tissues of focus are both the viscera, or internal organs, and nerves of the body respectively and their surrounding structures. Both Visceral Manipulation and Neural Manipulation are very gentle techniques developed by Dr. Jean Pierre Barral to address pain, dysfunction and other effects caused by the effects of lesions and restrictions in the indicated soft tissue. (For more detailed information about VM follow this link. For more information about NM follow this link). Both modalities are combined as needed with NeuroLymphatic Reactive Triads™ Bodywork.
- Chikly Brain Work Techniques
The tissues of focus are located within the brain and spinal cord. This modality, developed by Dr. Bruno Chikly, incudes both energetic work and subtle techniques through very light touch developed to release restrictions of the central nervous system and to address the damaging effects that these restrictions cause. (For more information follow this link). I both practice this modality on its own and within sessions incorporating NeuroLymphatic Reactive Triads™ Bodywork.
- Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (LDT)
Lymphatic Drainage Therapy an osteopathic technique developed by Dr. Bruno Chikly most often employing very light touch. The lymphatic system cleanses your blood transporting toxins to the excretory system. LDT aids the body to reduce inflammation in the interstitial tissues by first stimulating the function of the lymphatic system and then releasing and directing the fluid into the lymphatic system. In the case that there is a restriction in the flow, there are techniques that skilled practitioners utilize to release them or to help the body's lymphatic system find a more efficient route. In doing this, LDT aids in the functioning of the immune and parasympathetic nervous systems.
- CranioSacral Therapy (CST)
The form of CranioSacral Therapy (CST) in which I have been trained was developed by Dr. John Upledger. CST is a gentle yet powerful technique. It works by helping the body's natural healing mechanisms dissipate the negative effects of stress on the central nervous system, which it accomplishes by optimizing the movement of cerebrospinal fluid through the spine and around the skull and guided by the client’s inner wisdom. CST complements the body's natural healing processes, and is therefore used more and more as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease and its effectiveness in addressing a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction. CST provides a very soothing and relaxing healing experience and is frequently used as a stand-alone modality of a session or integrated with other osteopathic modalities and techniques.
Energy Work
I practice a combination of intuitive energy work and techniques including work with chakra balancing and down regulation of the autonomic nervous system down to the cellular level, the latter of which is a technique that I have learned through Chikly's Brain Work Therapy. This work frequently comes up in a session, as such I incorporate it on a case by case basis as it comes up in a session. I do not currently offer stand-alone sessions exclusively focused on energy work.
SomatoEmotional and HeartCentered Bodywork
The impact of the effects of emotions trapped in the body are gaining more and more recognition in the medical field. For more information on this topic, read or listen to the work of Dr. Gabor Maté and Peter Levine.
While I recognize the integral role the emotions play on the body, I do not offer stand-alone sessions incorporating somatoemotional work. I only incorporate it as it comes up in the session and will refer clients out for more concentrated work if it becomes apparent that it could be of benefit. I have training in the following techniques and modalities.
- SomatoEmotional Release (SER)
SomatoEmotional Release is a therapeutic process that uses and expands on the principles of CranioSacral Therapy to help rid the body, mind, spirit and soul of the residual effects of trauma by tapping into and following the inner wisdom of the body. SER work enhances the work within the body during a CranioSacral session.
- Heart Centered Therapy (HCT)
Developed by Alaya Chikly, Heart Centered Therapy, provides tools to be able to address the emotional piece of trauma that has been trapped in the body and effects the quality and function of that region of the body.
